Peyton, who has autism, grew up at a time when autism was largely misunderstood. She was labeled and segregated at a young age, and her inability to communicate left her vulnerable to physical and psychological abuse. When, at age 22, she was introduced to a supported typing technology, she amazed everyone by typing “I am intelligent.” Armed with the ability to communicate, Peyton was finally able to attend meaningful classes went on to graduate valedictorian from college. Her dramatic life story was published in the memoir I Am Intelligent: From Heartbreak to Healing—A Mother and Daughter’s Journey through Autism (Skirt, 2012—available on Amazon), written with her mom Dianne Goddard and co-author Carol Cujec. Peyton and Carol recently teamed up again for their middle-grade novel REAL, inspired by Peyton’s life story. REAL is set to be published in February, 2021 by Shadow Mountain Publishing.

The animated film on autism was created as part of an experimental project exploring biographical work on extraordinary women, and vertical formats for viewing on digital devices. More information about the experimental animated short film at https://leirighfilms.com/titles/treasure-all
